This week is an important week. We need to complete last minute details, package all finished pages, and upload the finished packages to Tuckers Resources>2015 Shield Files>DONE PAGES folder. We will be checking on Thursday and Friday to make sure all files are present. During spring break I will be compiling the finished book and ALL FILES have to be there for that work to proceed so we make deadline.
Last week we took a picture for senior standouts that was slightly out of perspective - the image included a frame around a portrait of Matt and Luna. We will be working with this image to understand how later versions of Photoshop allow us to fix the perspective so we get the image that we need. Download this image to complete this lesson.
Project Choices for the Coming Weeks:
Once your yearbook responsibilities are complete, you have a number of options for project work. We will be working on these three projects over the next three weeks. All students will be required to complete at least two of these projects by April 17th. All three should be really fun to work on and they will be a welcomed break from yearbook pressures and NOCTI testing.

This project should prove to be a real challenge, but you will love the finished product. I'm sure you've never created anything quite like this before. You will be creating a style of visual art that was conceived by the Israeli artist, Yaacov Agam. To learn about his life's work, watch this video below:
It's difficult to show Agam's work statically in a still photograph - the work requires movement on the part of the viewer. The term for this is kinetic sculpture. Below is a video that simulates that movement:
Below is a how-to video on creating an agamograph like the one show above:
Some tips for approaching this project:
Below is a sample image that I created in Photoshop:
NOCTI Hands-on Make up Date: Wednesday, March 18, 2014
We started to make major progress on the book this past week. There is a new template posted to Tucker's Resources>2015 Shield Files>templates/shared resources. This template is being used for all CTE 2 page spreads. Copy the entire folder to your hard drive and work from there. The template can be edited to suit your purposes. Using templates will add some continuity to the designs we are making.
Make sure that you're using preflight options for getting pages ready for print. You can download and use this file for preflighting: 2015 Yearbook Preflight Settings
If you are finished your yearbook pages:
Photoshop Tutorial: Color Replacement Tool - Complete the tutorial trying the sample files. Then apply the skills to 2 images of your choice. (cars can work really well for this tool.)
InDesign Tutorial: How to make a flyer - Download the associated files and use your own fonts to make this simple beginner flyer.
NOCTI Hands-0n Testing - will take place in our lab all day Monday. Two graduates, Abby Cook and Ryan Kier will be evaluating the work of our senior and adult students. Please keep noise levels down during this test - it might be a good idea to get out and take any last minute yearbook pictures you might need for this year's book.
Yearbook - As we finish up layouts in InDesign we need to turn our focus towards making sure that we have created files that will work when they are given to the printer. This means we need to preflight our InDesign files. The video below explains InDesign's preflight panel.
It helps to have some understanding of the CMYK printing process when working on any design that is going to be printed in mass. The video below is a good explanation of CMYK printing:
The video below is a good reference for how to package your layouts so that all design components are in one place. This makes it easy to pass the finished designs on to another designer or printing company.
I reviewed portfolios over the weekend and I'd like to share some of the amazing work that a few of you have on your portfolios. We'll be reviewing portfolios throughout the week.
I appreciate everyone's effort while I was out sick. There were some wonderfully creative solutions to the challenges that I posted.
We still have a number of images that we need to capture this week for the yearbook. I will need both AM and PM classes to help out in taking the remaining missing images.
On Wednesday we will be hosting every 5th grader in the Great Valley School District. I expect that you all will be good hosts and share your enthusiasm for this program with our visitors. I'd like to offer a couple of activities for our guests: photoshop animation, photoshop cloning project, scratch drawing and portfolio sharing. If you can think of any project we've done that would make a 5th grader go wow - let me know! This is how we keep our program alive and I appreciate your help!
We will be doing NOCTI review for the hands-on portion of the test this week. This works well with our yearbook efforts as both the test and our yearbook require the same working path.
I wish that I felt better and I don't want you all to get this. It's nasty. For today I want you to work on something tropical - think warm! Here are the suggested projects:
Beginner (1st year students) - Create a beautiful flip flop icon in Adobe Illustrator
Intermediate/Advanced - Create a colorful tropical parrot using gradients in Adobe Illustrator
You can download the basic sketch by clicking here.
Please post your finished work to your journal as it will be a graded project. If you're not finished yesterday's work, or if you don't complete today's - make a post that displays how far along you are. Have a good weekend - I hope to be back on Monday morning. If you have questions you can leave them in the comments below - I will monitor this page hourly.
I'm feeling under the weather today and wanted you to have some choices for today's assignment. I expect everyone to make an attempt and post a finished piece to your journal at the end of class today!
So here are some recommendations based on your skill levels:
If you complete the recommended assignment above and you wish to watch the next episode of the Street Art Throwdown.
Post comments below on key points if you decide to watch this. Develop one good question about the episode you watched. For example, In Episode 2 what was the main problem with Agana's poster design? Post your questions on this entry.

Theory for This Week:
One area that we are going to be stressing this week is the concept of creating page layouts that will print and transfer well. This means using Preflight Profiles in InDesign. Download this preflight document and we'll be discussing how this profile can help us avoid pitfalls in getting our book to the publisher and saving time and money by avoiding mistakes.
Our Workflow - for creating pages must be consistent and mirrors what is done in industry. Here are the basic steps:
Here is a video that demonstrates this process - review this when necessary!
