First, I want to congratulate those of you that participated in Senior Portraits last week. The quality of the work combined with the technical and customer service skills that were in evidence last week were amazing. The resulting portraits are innovative, creative and reach a new level of excellence for our school. I'm very proud of the effort you put forth in this project. I can't wait for parents of our students to see the finished product. We have another three or four days left to complete the senior class and then we'll switch to portraits for new staff members and underclass school pictures. Keep up the great work! This week we're going to begin working in Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator is a vector drawing program. The program is used for creating logos, drawings and mathematically-based illustrations as well as working with specialty type treatments. It creates artwork differently than Photoshop which is a raster-based program. We'll be working on a variety of projects in Adobe Illustrator including the following:
This is an important week in our lab. Senior Portrait sessions begin this week and we'll be taking portraits of this year's graduating class. Our job is to get the best images possible for our upper class students. That means being patient and working to make our clients happy. We'll be doing test shots on Monday and determining our base settings and lights. We'll be taking three shots for all of our models: an informal image for ID cards, a formal shot for the yearbook and a cap and gown shot for everyone's mom. Feel free to take additional shots if you want to be creative, just make sure we have at least the base shots covered. We will also be continuing our work in Adobe Photoshop basics that we've been doing over the past three weeks. This week we'll be working on several different projects:
This week will continue to work on basic Photoshop skills. Our projects this week will focus on collage techniques. Much of what we do in Photoshop is built around these basic collage skills:
This week we will continue to focus on Photoshop basic skills through a major project we'll be using to decorate our room. On Friday, Sean asked me if we could do an Andy Warhol style portrait. Warhol was the father of pop art and he was famous for this style of serigraph (screen printing). Warhol's portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Kennedy and other famous people in the 60s were some of his most popular work. It is important to remember that these portraits were done in an age before Photoshop and Warhol hand cut the color separations for his work. Photoshop makes creating this style much easier. The Photoshop skills necessary to alter a photograph into this style are as follows:
Below is a video tutorial that we'll be using to learn this technique. We can all create one of Marilyn Monroe. You can download the same image being used in the video by clicking on this link. After you've worked through the technique with Marilyn, I'd like you to create a self-portrait study using either a photo you already have or one taken in our lab. We'll be printing these out for a Welcome to CommArt bulletin board section. One aspect of working in Photoshop that you will learn is that there are multiple ways of solving a problem. Below is another way to create a similar style. Both ways work, if done carefully. This is our first Photoshop project this school year. In this project you will learn to:
This week we worked with two basic skills - zentangle drawing/doodling and cutting mats to present a finished work to a client/customer. We used ink pens, pencils, prismacolor markers and our new mat cutter to fiinish the work. Will add to the collection as we finish our first project. Art Ideas: On Thursdays, an idea box with almost 200 different creative ideas will be placed on the art tables. Pick a topic (you get one tradeback per week) and create the artwork in any media you choose (digital or analog.) Try to work on a weakness at least 50% of the time. You need to make your choice on Thursday and bring in any props or visuals you might need for your drawing session on Fridays. I’d prefer if you didn’t repeat any past idea if possible – unless you have an awesome way to revisit the idea!
Virtual Visiting Artists Series: At least once a month we’ll be either be using either Skype or Google+ Hangout to speak with a working artist. In October, Rob Cori twitter: @COPSnROBers has offered to visit us virtually. We’ll have graphic designers, photographers, web developers, illustrators and multi-media creators visiting us. You are going to have to study their work and generate good questions for them. I have been corresponding with quite a few artists over the past few weeks. Not all of these are confirmed yet, but here is a list of the folks I'm trying to schedule for this year. These will be recorded and posted to our class site. If you follow an artist on Twitter that you’d like me to approach – send me a tweet (@tchsart) with the artists’ Twitter name and I’ll work on getting them to virtually visit us. Why are we here?Welcome to the 2013-2014 School year at TCHS Pickering! I'm glad to be back working to help you reach your career goals. I'm looking forward to getting to know our new students and growing the potential of all of our students to do great things. I appreciate your feedback - so although this weekly communication will explain what we do every week in our class in my words, this is your forum as well. If you have ideas or suggestions, feel free to comment on these posts every week. You are the reason we're here and you matter the most! What's New?We've added some new technology over the summer:
