Project for Today

10/26/2017

Keepin' it REAL!
Watch the video below and be ready to discuss this on Friday
If you have completed your playing cards project make sure that you've uploaded a slideshow onto your portfolio page. This project is due tomorrow and you need to post it to receive a grade!

Here is another exercise you can do today if your cards are complete do either the circles or hatching exercise on this web page. If you want to change it up, try using a Wacom tablet. Work hard today as I'm still on the mend. Hope to be there tomorrow!

This Week's Project: Designing Playing Cards
This design project is asking you to create a set of face cards (Ten, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, and Joker) in each face using a theme of your choosing. These cards could be created using either Illustrator and Photoshop (or both.) If you choose to work in Photoshop be certain to use a resolution of at least 300 ppi. One other thing - SAVE OFTEN!

Due Date: October 27, 2017 slideshow posted to your journal portfolio page.

Steps for this project using the design process shown below
Picture
  1. Understand the problem - playing cards have a history and a distinct purpose. Is there a standard size that this design should be? What is the most important design aspect when creating a playing card design?
  2. Research and Investigate - Do research on existing designs using a Google Image Search. Answer the problem questions above using web research.
  3. Generate ideas - Try to come up with a theme that shows the hierarchy of playing cards. Aces tend to be the highest level card followed by Kings, Queens, Jacks, etc. What visuals can you use to demonstrate that hierarchy?
Are you going to work realistically or abstractly? Are you going to use an existing media piece to show hierarchy? For example, you might want to look at existing movies, TV shows, animations, book characters for your theme. Discuss your theme possibilities with a classmate and get feedback from them.
Create rough pencil sketches of how those potential themes might look in a playing card. Save your sketches - you will be able to use them again later. Your pencil sketches are your design plan - yes, they are important!
  4. Pick an idea/plan a solution - Look over your sketches and try to pick a theme that will be clear to your intended audience. Doing this will make the design work easier to accomplish.
  5. Create a prototype - You might need to learn some new skills in Illustrator to develop the basic shapes (hearts, diamonds, spades, clubs) you will need for your cards. Use this tutorial link to help you create strong vector graphics you can use on all of the cards. Viewing the YouTube videos below may help you develop a process for working in Photoshop and/or Illustrator.
  6. Test/Evaluate the prototype - Look for errors - fix them! Once you have all five card designs complete, post your images as a jpg slideshow on your portfolio page. Use this rubric to self-evaluate how you did completing this project. Email the filled-out rubric to the instructor.

Week 5 & 6: Projects & Objectives

10/2/2017

Competencies this project:
  • 306 - Produce color  illustrations using various media.
  • 307 - Create value with the use of layering.
  • 507 - Demonstrate basic use of image editing software.
  • 510 - Demonstrate appropriate use of different file formats.
  • 511 - Organize and manage digital files.
  • 604 - Produce thumbnails, roughs and comprehensive.

Portrait Retouching
We are going to start doing photo retouching for this year's yearbook in Lightroom. Lightroom will work for nearly 90% of our images. Lightroom is being used by most professional photographers for their post-production work these days. The file management strengths greatly outweigh those of Photoshop. The tools are simpler to use and won't take long to learn. The videos below show the basic process for dealing with most portrait images.

Halloween Mask Project
This year we're going to be creating/designing masks for Halloween. We have purchased a number of different mask designs that we can use. Your job is to do the following steps:
  1. Create a clear theme that you're going to use in your design.
  2. Create a flat mock-up in color on paper.
  3. Use very light pencil on the mask to plot out your design.
  4. Utilize acrylic paint, watercolors, pastels, color markers to finish your mask.
  5. If you desire, you can use Modpodge to add a protective coating to your mask. This will have a satin gloss finish.
