Each student in my class will be creating and publishing a class journal. The reasons I ask you to do these journals are:
I always thought twitter was pretty dumb - that I really didn't care what Ashton Kusher had for breakfast - but I've slowly come to realize that it is an awesome professional development tool that put me in contact with experts in the creative field all over the world. A wise man - Roger Martin put it this way, "All of us are smarter than one of us."
You will need to create your own twitter account. If you already have an account you can use it - but it might be wise to create another for professional purposes. It's really about creating a brand for yourself that you can sell to colleges or a potential employer. To create a new account, just click on the twitter bird at the top of this post and you'll be linked to Twitter's home page. You'll have to verify your email address after creating a user name and password. Please use your real name when you're setting this up - we can always change it later.
Some of you are doing great work with your journals - these are going to be great ways to demonstrate what you are learning and you need to stay focused on these. I have put comments on those that I can and have commented on the weekly grades in some cases. This is how I'm going to be grading work from now on - so make sure you're getting at least three good posts per week. Trust me when I tell you that they will pay great dividends in the future. You're building your own learning diary and reference tool.
Some of you are still not putting screen captures of your in-progress work on your journals - I've created a video that shows how to do this and it's posted below this post.
This week we're going to start a major project - a self portrait in Adobe Illustrator. If you haven't completed the Illustrator Exercises from last week you need to complete those before trying to start the self-portrait project.
We're also going to begin taking group portraits in all of the shops this Tuesday. If you haven't been making required posts to your journal you will not be eligible to go out on these photo shoots. I've found a great tool to help you understand the manual settings of our cameras and I'd like you to try this simulator out:
Many of you don't seem to be taking my desire for you to journal seriously. Perhaps this slide show will help you understand why I think this is an important task that I want you to be doing. Many of you have posted nothing. It's time to change that - start working on this today - you'll thank me later.
Mr. Tucker is in his 22nd year as the instructor for the Graphic Arts program. Prior to his teaching career he worked in the flexography industry for ten years and in quick printing for ten years.
