Today is the AM Color Challenge - use this link to access the color acquity test. Good luck to all competitors!
I have been asked to have all of you complete this survey on your opinions. This will help us understand what your thoughts are about our school. Please complete this by end of classes on Monday. Click this link to start the survey.
This magazine arrived in my mailbox this morning. Harold Barber and Ken Sebra are both cover guys now! This is a first for my program and for those guys. Congrats everyone on some good publicity for our program and our school.
PETE & C Logo Design Competition: Nick KIer took second prize in last year's competition. This competition has some nice prizes and again a great resume piece for finalists. Great project to be doing while we are working on logo designs.
SURREALISTIC ME: This project's culminating product will be a published book of artwork from students across the globe. The prize here is prestige and an awesome portfolio and resume piece. Plus it's a really cool collaborative project. This design project asks you to create a simple logo for yourself. Working in Illustrator, you need to create a simple, clean and modern logo. All artwork must be original and incorporate your name. Use the design process for this project. That means you will write a short descriptive paragraph about what traits are your strongest and should be represented in the design; you will be required to create 3 to 5 thumbnail ideas; and then use Illustrator to create a finished logo. Get feedback from your classmates and myself and then re-design based on that feedback. Below are links to two sites that I want you to study: What makes a good logo? How to write a design brief It is a good idea to watch the video below to get an idea of the type of progression you should be making while completing this project. So far we've taken close to 1000 portrait images of the Class of 2012. Congratulations to the students who have been working so hard on this project - the photos are impressive and well done! The next step is going to require that we all chip in on touching up and airbrushing these images. Below is a step-by-step video that goes over the basic techniques we'll be using for getting this work done. The key concepts are:
I just watched a demonstration video on Wacom's YouTube video channel that featured the Canadian political cartoonist and digital painter, Patrick LaMontagne. Patrick is a really talented artist and he shares quite a few terrific tips for working with a drawing tablet to create original work. His workflow process is very simple and one that we should be modeling. I've put the video below, but I would suggest that you watch this full screen (on YouTube) with Photoshop open and a Wacom Tablet connected on an extended monitor. Try to pick up how he inks artwork, colors cartoon-style artwork and how he creates, modifies and saves a few simple working brushes. The video is long (about an hour) - but I think it's worth your investment of time - watch this and become a tablet master! Think Different. Your education up to this point may have been failing you - do you agree with this statement?

Due Date: Friday, September 16, 2011 Web Link to Ashley Gilbertson's Photograph: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/03/21/magazine/20100321-soliders-bedrooms-slideshow.html What do you think of this photographer's images? Is the story that they are telling powerful? If so, are they more moving than images of war-torn areas that he may have taken as a war photo-journalist? Please comment below to share your thoughts on this collection. Design is a problem to be solved will be the theme of this year. I've been collaborating with other teachers of this subject over the summer and this collaboration has resulted in a few new ideas about how to assess your work/efforts in this class. This process could be used for just about any class. The steps shown below will be our approach for all major projects and we'll be going over strategies for each step of the design process the first few weeks of class. The key component is I really want to see you grow your skills as independent problem-solvers/designers. The ability to reflect on our work is an important skill and one that I may have neglected in the past. One thing returning students will notice is that you will probably be writing a little more in this class than we have previously. We'll be using forums on this site for much of this writing and the bulk of this will be answering basic questions like
