The photo director for National Geographic, David Griffin knows the power of photography to connect us to our world. In a talk filled with glorious images, he talks about how we all use photos to tell our stories. 9th Grade Students - We will be working on a grid collage, colorizing black and white photographs, and begin work on t-shirt designs.
10th, 11th, 12th Grade Students - My Favorite Photographer - The photo theme project is going to be a little bit different. You can work with a partner on this project. Here are the steps for completing this project:
This week's photo theme is fall. The last remnants of fall color are fading and this week is probably our last chance at capturing the fall colors. Again this week, I want a three-photo study done in InDesign completed by this Friday afternoon.
Along the lines of improving our photo-taking skills -I want every student to read this article by this Wednesday afternoon. It deals specifically with how to better your photography and we will be discussing it in class on Thursday. Many of you missed the date of the black and white photo study - those images were due this past Friday. As I stated at the end of the 1st quarter I will not extend due dates for any student who was present for class most of last week. In order to stay on top of assignments be sure to check the class calendar two to three times a week. Also due this week is your final magazine layout. We will be adding formatted text and finishing this up in theory this week. Welcome to the third and final group of ninth grade exploratory students. We have six weeks for you to get a feel for how our shop operates and I hope you have a good time while you're exploring our lab. We are one quarter through the school year and I'm happy with our progress over the first quarter. We've worked our way to getting most of the portraits we need for this year's yearbook. We've established a great website that parents and students are using to purchase prints of the work we've done. The positive feedback that I get regarding the quality of the portraits is overwhelming. Special thanks to Heather Knapp and Jake Brams for working so hard on getting great shots and keeping track of the many faces using a Google spreadsheet.
This week's photo theme is monochrome (black and white) images. The finished product will be a photo study created in InDesign. A sample study is shown at the bottom of this post. You will need to post-process these images using PhotoShop adjustment layers (Black & White and possibly Photo Filter). Another project we'll be working on is a four page magazine spread. I would like to see you use images we've been taking in the photo themes for past weeks. This is to get everyone used to placing images and working with text frames in InDesign. Ninth grade students will be finishing their calendar projects this week as well. Two areas we can improve upon is shop attire and getting assignments in by due dates. I will be phasing out extensions over the course of the second quarter - the due date is the due date - late assignments will lose one letter grade for each day that it is late. Deadlines are an important part of being a creative designer and the reality is that extensions are rare in the industry. Photo Theme of the Week: Many of you fell behind last week in the photography challenge. Try to get caught up this week by Friday afternoon and post your missing images to Tuckers Resources. This week's challenge is self portrait. For this theme I want a series of three images from each one of you. We'll continue to do some work on the motion pictures from last week as well since senior portraits and the field trip last week cut down our work in that realm.
Senior Portraits: We are getting to the last section of the alphabet and should be finished all seniors by Wednesday. I want to thank Heather Knapp, Jake Brams, Danielle Higgins, Shea O'Neill and all of you who have helped move this section of the yearbook along. Your hard work is much appreciated. T-shirt Projects: 9th and 10th grade students should be working on finishing their t-shirt projects by the end of this week. 11th & 12th grade students should be planning their artwork for their shirts and creating screens. Philadelphia Museum of Art: Thanks to all of you who attended - I don't say this often enough - but I'm proud to be associated with you as your teacher - everyone was great that day and it makes it more likely we can return to the museum soon. Thanks all. Be sure to complete the forum reflection before this Thursday. This week will find us in the midst of much activity. Senior portraits are the main yearbook deliverable for us this week. See the post below for tips on capturing good portrait images of our seniors. Make sure we're keeping accurate records on the Google Docs schedule.
Photo Theme of the Week: Motion is the key element we'll be working on this week. Be sure to read both of these articles to get ideas for capturing motion: http://www.digital-photography-school.com/a-beginners-to-capturing-motion-in-your-photography http://www.digital-photography-school.com/13-places-to-practice-taking-beautiful-motion-blur-images Feel free to bring in props (skateboards, umbrellas, etc.) to help you work on these image captures. Field Trip on Thursday: Be sure to have your permission slip and money for this field trip in by Tuesday's class. We're going to have a picnic lunch at the museum. AM Project: work on T-shirt project will begin. Remember that you can use clip art that can be found the Art Explosion series on Tucker's Resources. All Shots: remember the concept of give the face a space to look into
Informal Shot: these look best when subject is angled to left or right and turns face back towards camera. Formal Shot: Girls: note how flower is to be held - thumb should be behind other fingers - again - angle knees towards left or right and turn back towards camera. Cap & Gown: Make sure that the hat is really pulled down - body angle should be straight on - you may need to move the camera back to capture full width of mortar (hat) - make sure we're not cropping parts of the hat out - this just doesn't work. We are scheduled to go on a field trip on October 21, 2010 to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. We will be departing at 8:05 AM and plan to return to Pickering by 2:00 PM that day. The cost of the trip is $15 and this includes transportation and admittance to the museum. We will be having a picnic lunch on the museum grounds. Permission slips will be handed out and if you need a replacement you can download this file here:
Photography Challenge
This week's theme is reflection. Reflection can mean many things - here is a google search with the terms reflection + photography. Keep up the good creative work you are doing - we are now using Tucker's Resources to post these images - there is a folder marked PhotoThemePix - you should be placing your themed images into this folder. You can see your classmates images in the Student Sample Work page of this site. Portraits This Week We need to complete staff portraits this week and begin shooting tests for Senior Portrait shots that we'll be taking live next Monday, October 18, 2010. Internal Work this Week
Two different designs have been requested. One is for the Pennsylvania Education Technology Expo and Conference. This is one of the largest conferences of its kind on the east coast and attracts over 1000 people every year. They sponsor a student competition for a pin design every year and this year I want one of you to win this competition. There are several cash prizes awarded and this would be an awesome accomplishment for your portfolios. Please be sure to follow the details that you can download on their site.
If you would prefer I also need a new logo designed for our Teacher Academy program. This logo can be multi-color and designed in Photoshop or Illustrator. Be sure to use 300 ppi resolution. I am requiring every 10th through 12th grade student to submit a design for at least one of these logos. These will be due at end-of-class on Thursday, October 7th. |
