I had good conversation this morning with quite a few 10th grade students about choosing topics and completing the topic form for their research paper. The intent of this paper is for you to research a career related to your career area, Graphic Arts. You want to do a good job on these papers because they are components of your ePortfolio. Employers and Colleges want to see writing samples when considering hiring or admitting potential students/employers. Here is what I see as being major subject areas for this paper:

I just stumbled upon a site called Graffiti Analysis 2.0. Watch the video below to see how it works. Basically the software records the motions made by graffiti artists and digitizes the finished artwork created.
The idea was created by Evan Roth as a thesis he was writing while a student at Parsons in NYC. It's visually impressive - and a good example of Creative Commons licensing. Evan has made the technology accessible to everyone. I'm going to try to contact Mr. Roth and see if he can visit our class virtually via Skype. Welcome back to school. I hope you all had a restful break and that you're ready to begin a new year. Now is a good time for new beginnings and we're going to be changing the way we operate a bit. Seniors have their NOCTI test coming up and to help them (and you) we're going to be doing something called the "Technical Term of the Day." Historically CAT students do real well on the hands-on portion of this test and not-so-well on the written evaluation. We need to work harder on learning the technical terms of our field. The first thing every student will do at the beginning of every class is to visit this site and get the Technical Term of the Day. It's just to the right of this home page blog-right above my photo. We'll all be using Google Docs to publish our own personal technical terms page. Consider this spreadsheet as notes for your professional growth. In addition to collecting notes for this class we'll be using an online quiz and test center to gauge our learning progress. I have e-mailed each of you a user name for the testing and quiz site we'll be using. Make sure you save this email so that you can log-in to the site in the future. The site is called Testmarker. Currently there is one quiz scheduled for terms associated with color theory. This quiz MUST be taken by January 15th. You will get one chance to take these short quizzes - make sure that you're familiar with the terms before you take the quiz. There have been problems with students knowing whether or not an uploaded assignment was successfully submitted to me. To get rid of that problem all students will be developing a Graphic Arts Google website of their own. I'll be going over how to do this in class over the first few days of this new year. You are responsible for placing your work to this page. This should help you when you are trying to put together your Career Portfolio in 11th and 12th grade. I have created a sample page you can model yours after. When I was coming up through school the Peanuts creator was considered a genius by most people. I recently came across this piece by him:
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world. 2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners. 3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America Contest. 4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize. 5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress. 6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners. How did you do? The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. They are not second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners. Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one: 1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school. 2.. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time. 3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile. 4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.. 5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with. Easier? The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are NOT the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones who care. Happy Holidays everyone! The Nonsense Society: Young Photographers Series I highly recommend that you look at how others present their work in their portfolios - not that you need to copy others work - but modeling presentation is a good skill to pick up. You may also wish to share your work with others on this site - let me know if you get published. I just saw a terrific talk given by the writer Daniel Pink that I want to share with you. You are the future of business and, because of that, I'd like to know what you think about the ideas that Mr. Pink expresses in this video. Do you agree with his premise or disagree? Suggest ways that we could apply his ideas to what we do in our class. Please reply directly to this blog post. This week's project requires you to watch the following video. While watching the video pay attention to key events in the history of graphic arts. A list of terms is available for download in the Theory Notes & Downloads section of this site. We will be designing a poster (11 x 17) that commemorates Graphic Design's history. This design can use images from the history of graphic design. For example, images of Gutenberg's Bible, the book of Kells, and partial images of Art Nouveau forms of design could be portions of the design. If you quote the film, be sure to give credit to the original source of the quote.
