I have a family obligation today and won't be with you. While I'm out do the following:
You can download the background texture for this exercise at Spoon Graphics webpage. Another choice you might want to consider for today would be to try your hand at a cinemagraph. Click here for a good tutorial on creating this style of gif animation. Here is one we made with morning students yesterday. This is from the same video shoot.
Finish Up:
This week we’re going to begin working on a project called Mini-Me/Mega-Me. We will be working with partners throughout this project and responsibilities will be evenly shared. Each partner will plan a photo shoot of themselves in an environment they wish to be placed into. The idea is to create two surreal composite images from a group of images. You will need to miniaturize yourself in the mini-me part of this assignment. In the second part, mega-me, you’ll become a giant in an unusual place. Turn yourself into Godzilla or King-Kong scale. It will be important to pay attention to light, shadows and image quality. Click on this link to see some previous students' results. Last week we worked on exploring the many allied careers in the visual arts. This week I want you to research many of the great assets student-artists can use to reach those careers. Share your favorite art sites in the comments below. I just discovered a student-centered site called Student Art Guide. Please explore their site and comment below on any good finds before Friday of this week. This week you will get some choices on the weekly project. We are doing a special drawing day this Friday - so make sure your project work is completed by Thursday. Below are some suggested projects for you to work on:
Welcome to Commercial Art Careers Week at TCHS Pickering! This week we'll be working on a campaign to help us and the general public understand careers in Visual Arts a little better.
This week we will be talking about careers, skills and training requirements for all sorts of careers in the visual arts. You are going to be designing an infographic in Adobe Illustrator as a culminating project. You are going to need to do some research on visual arts careers and come up with compelling information to share. It can focus on any skills, training, compensation, or skill area in the visual arts. Below are some sites you can use to begin your research:
The size we'll be using for our infographic will be 600 pixels X 2000 pixels. Below are two samples based on our class discussion on Monday: Last week's assignments (defying gravity, agamograph, photo cluster) - two of these projects must be posted to your learning journals by Friday, April 17th. No extensions will be given. This week's projects: 3D Drawing - Optical Illusion Art - we'll be using this tutorial to create a 3D drawing. This link shows an alternate way to create this artwork. Photography Skills - Green screen photography will be used to incorporate ourselves into the analog 3D art project we're doing this week. We'll be using Photoshop to separate ourselves from the greenscreen background - see the video below. Illustrator Project - How to distribute shapes within another shape in Illustrator This is an interesting free plug-in for Adobe Illustrator - we'll be working with this to create a study. Yearbook: There a few loose ends (missing files) that need to be completed very early in the week. I will connect with those involved on Tuesday. We also have NTHS and NHS induction ceremony this week and need to finish a two-page spread by Friday morning.
The book looks very good - those of you that worked on it should be proud. Those of you that designed 5 or more pages will be getting a free yearbook from the publisher. We need to get out and sell this hard! We will begin selling this week! Projects: We will continue our work on these project choices this week. The details were listed in the Week 29 post. If you have completed and posted two of these already - we need to start using up some overstock materials that we've accumulated. Please see me if you've completed these projects and posted them to your journal. There are some nice samples posted below. Yearbook Work: This week is an important week. We need to complete last minute details, package all finished pages, and upload the finished packages to Tuckers Resources>2015 Shield Files>DONE PAGES folder. We will be checking on Thursday and Friday to make sure all files are present. During spring break I will be compiling the finished book and ALL FILES have to be there for that work to proceed so we make deadline. Perspective Cropping: Last week we took a picture for senior standouts that was slightly out of perspective - the image included a frame around a portrait of Matt and Luna. We will be working with this image to understand how later versions of Photoshop allow us to fix the perspective so we get the image that we need. Download this image to complete this lesson. Project Choices for the Coming Weeks: Once your yearbook responsibilities are complete, you have a number of options for project work. We will be working on these three projects over the next three weeks. All students will be required to complete at least two of these projects by April 17th. All three should be really fun to work on and they will be a welcomed break from yearbook pressures and NOCTI testing. Defying Gravity with Photoshop tutorial step-by-step Shape Cluster Photo Display with Photoshop tutorial step-by-step Agamograph Project: This project should prove to be a real challenge, but you will love the finished product. I'm sure you've never created anything quite like this before. You will be creating a style of visual art that was conceived by the Israeli artist, Yaacov Agam. To learn about his life's work, watch this video below: It's difficult to show Agam's work statically in a still photograph - the work requires movement on the part of the viewer. The term for this is kinetic sculpture. Below is a video that simulates that movement: Below is a how-to video on creating an agamograph like the one show above: Some tips for approaching this project:
Below is a sample image that I created in Photoshop: NOCTI Hands-on Make up Date: Wednesday, March 18, 2014
Yearbook: We started to make major progress on the book this past week. There is a new template posted to Tucker's Resources>2015 Shield Files>templates/shared resources. This template is being used for all CTE 2 page spreads. Copy the entire folder to your hard drive and work from there. The template can be edited to suit your purposes. Using templates will add some continuity to the designs we are making. Make sure that you're using preflight options for getting pages ready for print. You can download and use this file for preflighting: 2015 Yearbook Preflight Settings If you are finished your yearbook pages: Photoshop Tutorial: Color Replacement Tool - Complete the tutorial trying the sample files. Then apply the skills to 2 images of your choice. (cars can work really well for this tool.) InDesign Tutorial: How to make a flyer - Download the associated files and use your own fonts to make this simple beginner flyer. NOCTI Hands-0n Testing - will take place in our lab all day Monday. Two graduates, Abby Cook and Ryan Kier will be evaluating the work of our senior and adult students. Please keep noise levels down during this test - it might be a good idea to get out and take any last minute yearbook pictures you might need for this year's book. Yearbook - As we finish up layouts in InDesign we need to turn our focus towards making sure that we have created files that will work when they are given to the printer. This means we need to preflight our InDesign files. The video below explains InDesign's preflight panel. It helps to have some understanding of the CMYK printing process when working on any design that is going to be printed in mass. The video below is a good explanation of CMYK printing: |
