Welcome! Welcome to Commercial Art & Graphics at TCHS Pickering! Thanks for choosing our program and I am really looking forward to working with all of you throughout the 2016-17 school year. This year we have a great influx of new students as well as some very strong returning students. I'm hoping that each one of you bring all your ideas, creativity, and talent every day. Try to stretch what you know and take big chances every week. Basic Methods for this class Most weeks we will be working on three different project types:
I would love to see you approach these projects with your own ideas for how to complete them. I will share examples of finished works - but you can take any of these projects anywhere you wish. Making deadlines can be critical in the business world and if you need more time to complete a project it's on you to make that known to me. Click on this link to download the syllabus for this class. We'll go over this in class during the first week or so. Projects for Week 1 & 2 We are in the midst of a twenty million dollar renovation. You know that based on our delayed starting date. We need to be extra careful about moving throughout the building until we're finished. We had issues getting the computers ready for opening day and the computer lab will probably not be fully functional until next week sometime. Due to that we'll be working on just two areas this week - analog and photography. Analog - Popcicle Stick Challenge - see samples below. You can work in any coloring media you desire. I'd like to see two finished pieces - one bracelet and one flat. The flats you can figure out on your own. Photography - Portrait Bootcamp - we are being asked to provide ID cards for all staff and students. We need to begin taking portraits next week. This week we'll be setting up the portrait studio including a new beauty dish. We need to get all students working on this important project. If you haven't gotten your shirt size to me, please fill out the form below. We will be printing our uniforms next week - please don't make me guess your size, I'm not good at it. The first shirt is free. Additional shirts will cost $8 each. When the weather gets a little cooler we'll print some sweatshirts with our logo. Objectives: 512 - Organize and manage digital files. 607 - Demonstrate basic knowledge of printing processes. 609 - Prepare files for output. 913 - Participate in critiques. Yearbook: Thanks to all of you that worked so hard on this year's yearbook. I'd like to give special thanks to Dylan McQuiston, John Schell and Alexandria Mac Nair for really stepping up when I was unable to be here during the closing weeks approaching our deadline. You all created a wonderful publication that should make you quite proud. The book has been well received by a number of staff members and I think it's one of the best designed works we've done in 9 years of doing the book in our program. The portrait photography is amazing and the design is on-point. Kudos! Be sure to show your appreciation to our seniors and adult students over the next few weeks - they are a great group of individuals and helping them reach personal goals has been my privilege over the past few years. I will miss them all greatly. Year in Review Booklets: We have spent the last two weeks creating a year-in-review magazines and the results have been terrific! Being able to look at every student's work over the past year or more, is a great experience and it solidifies that we all are bringing wonderful gifts of talent to this room. Alex, Paul and Chris have finished their books and have posted them to their work journals:I will add everyone's finished magazine here as they are uploaded to the home sites. We were able to export Flash SWF files so that they can be viewed as a page-turning booklet on each student's portfolio page. We have run into a bit of a struggle to turn the files into saddle stitched booklets. Alex did her pagination manually, which can be terribly complicated and confusing. It is reminiscent of this year's calendar booklets. There is a more automated way to accomplish this task by using a script. You can download the script by visiting the website below and clicking on the link in YouTube. This will save a lot of time and make it easier to print laser copies of your booklet design. Let me know when you're ready (your design is completed and looks perfect) and I'll help you install and use the script. This week will be the last that you will be able to do screen printing projects. If you're using screens remember to clean and reclaim so we're ready to work next September. We need to start putting the shop's contents away for the summer and get prepared to move to our new lab next fall. I will need everyone's help in getting this work done. Start thinking about any media that you might want to work in next year - I will be placing orders for supplies before years' end and I appreciate your input. If there's a project you've done in another art class that you think we can utilize, please share it with me - we could use it next year. |
