I will be out today as I'm suffering from allergy-related vertigo and cannot drive. I will call in for questions during the first thirty minutes of both classes. Your assignment today is to read Austin Kleon's blog post HOW TO STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST (AND 9 OTHER THINGS NOBODY TOLD ME and answer the following questions as comments on this page:
This week we’re going to be working with Illustrator’s Pathfinder tool to create two types of logos. The first type of logo we’ll be working with is typographic. In addition, we’ll be creating an abstract logo using the same tools. The design project this week will be to create a logo for a musical group. This project allows you to redo the logo of an existing or historical musical act or if you’re feeling daring you can use this site called band namemaker. You will be required to create three different logos for the name of the band you choose. Two will be typographic and one will also have an abstract shape in addition to the name of the band. Be ready to explain the reasoning behind your logo. Seniors: your senior projects should be complete by mid-week. You will all be required to present your project to the class on Monday, May 8th during the PM class. Make sure that your ePortfolio is totally updated and that all components are present. Juniors: You should be finishing your ePortfolio entries for the job shadow you have done. Make sure that you have visual evidence, answers to the interview questions and a reflection of the experience. I need a student who is willing to shoot table and group shots at the prom this coming Friday. If you’re not already going to the prom and you’d like to volunteer – please let me know by Tuesday afternoon. Sophomores & Freshmen: There are a number of projects we’ll be working on in terms of production work this week.: Allied Health t-shirts, Senior Awards Breakfast Programs, Theater Programs for Jake Brams show. Today's lesson is for 9th through 11th grade students. 12th grade students should ALL be working on finishing up your senior projects.
This project will teach you how to take a full-color photograph and convert it to a work of art that looks hand drawn. The full tutorial can be found at this site. If you complete this work before the end of class you can work on your travel poster which is due on Friday afternoon. If you have any questions or concerns you can email me on Thursday. When completed the finish product should look something like this hummingbird: This week we'll be working in Illustrator to create a scanimation. This form of animation is a mechanical animation technique that is frequently used in a variety of children's and novelty collector books. It's a great way to see the connection between art and math! This website offers a pretty good tutorial for how to create these. For our in-class work we'll use this clip art of a simple heart. ![]()
Here are two color-related websites that attempt to inform us about how we see color and what the hidden meanings are of our color preferences:
Color Acquity Online Test Colorful Personality Test Historically the females have devastated the males in the color acquity contest. I'd highly recommend using the external monitors for this - makes it much easier to see slight variations in hue. Spring break is one week from today. It has been a long haul for all of us. The yearbook, PSSA testing, NOCTI testing, snow days, cold weather and lack of sunlight have made the winter seem long and spring break long in arriving.
Photography Challenge: Two or three images of the town where you live or an imaginary attraction that would make someone want to visit your town. This challenge is going to relate to the design challenge and you will be using these photos to create a travel promotional design. Research images that travel destinations use to make these fit into your design. Design Challenge: create a flyer 8 x 10 landscape or portrait orientation that uses the images shot in the Photography Challenge. Since this will require you to shoot outside of school (unless you want to change CAT Pickering into a health spa resort) I'm going to extend the due date of this project out to April 28th. This should give everyone an opportunity to borrow a camera (if necessary) and do some photography around your town. This is the next step in our Color Poster Project - We will be framing our theme photos using Illustrator.
We are three quarters through the school year and warm weather is just around the corner. We need to finish strongly. A number of activities need to be covered for our interactive yearbook page - prom, senior awards breakfast and dinner, the yearbook dedication ceremony and graduation for the class of 2011. Senior project presentations are scheduled for May 13th and the deadline for Junior Job Shadow Day is approaching (April 22nd.) Please pay close attention to the calendar as all project dates are posted to this page. You need to start attacking deadlines with vigor as they are what drive this industry. This Week's Photography Challenge: Color focus - photographs that are mainly made up of one color. Try doing a series of all one color or maybe a series that creates a rainbow. The series should contain six photos and should be posted as a slideshow to your portfolio page by Friday afternoon (April 8th.) Design Challenge: Rotating the word project. We'll be working with seeing similarities and differences between the three CS4 applications. In last week's product ad assignment, many of you chose to use Photoshop for creating your whole ad. Many of the ads looked amateurish because of that choice. Here is a rule of thumb for selecting the best tool for a given job: if you're creating anything with more than three lines of text - you'll end up with better results using Illustrator or InDesign to handle the type. That doesn't mean you can't work with your photo in PhotoShop - fix color, mask areas or apply affects - it just means that you should treat text (especially if it's paragraph text) as an equally important part of your design work. ![]()
Photography Challenge This week's photography challenge is product photography. For those of you who dislike taking photos of people, this is a career possibility that you may not have considered before. The site or movie below may help you with the technicalities of the product shoot. Be creative with this product shoot. You can set up your shoot in quite a few ways. Feel free to bring in an item for this if you feel like this will help your end product. Seven Product Photography Tips-good basic setup tips Design Challenge The design challenge this week requires you to create a sales ad for the item you used in your product shoot. The ad should feature at least one of the photos from your product shoot. Size dimensions for the design challenge is 7 x 10 inches. Post a jpg image of your finished ad on your portfolio page. A Twitter friend suggested that I read this blog post and I really thought it was filled with wisdom. Paul Graham offers words of advice to people your age in his post titled, "What you'll wish you'd known."
