Several students have expressed interest in taking pictures for this year's yearbook. I welcome your help with this task, but we need a step-by-step process for how we handle images for this year's book. The problem with digital cameras is that we can end up buried in images that are of varying quality. We're looking for great images - average will only work if we're in a bind.
Today we're going to be working on our local SkillsUSA competition. ALL TCHS students are members of Skills and all students will be participating in this competition. For seniors, this is great practice for the upcoming NOCTI exams and a potential avenue for getting money together for college. Competing in Skills is something that you'd want to place on your resume and feature in your portfolio.
To read the scope for this competition you can access the information two ways: Made sure that you read the design spec carefully. It's a pretty simple task. Don't forget the Wizard of Oz lesson on hierarchy! Competencies this week:
The next two weeks we are going to be working on two different projects. The first is a macro-photography/photoshop project we've never done before. I'm going to be asking you to team with a classmate and create a small staple city. Once created, you will need to set up a camera, a tripod or gorillapod and take some close up images of your creation. This is a great tutorial for getting started on this project. Below are sample images to give you some ideas for creating this. You will need to do some post-production work in either Lightroom or Photoshop to make these look believable. You can go as far as you wish with this - be creative! Below are raw files created by Dillon in the morning class: Competencies this week:
This week we'll be continuing our work in Adobe InDesign. We'll be creating a calendar. A calendar is a basic table with rows and columns. Font choice will be important to get the mood you are trying to create. Please read the Knowledge Base material on Typography and use the link for Google Fonts to pair two fonts that will work for your design. You will need anywhere between 12 to 16 photos for your calendar. You can use your own artwork (suggested) or other images if you prefer. I would recommend creating some sort of theme for your calendar as it will help in creating a coherent feel to the piece. We'll be adding holidays to our calendars and you can personalize it by adding birthdays and other significant dates. If you're a person that believes every day is a holiday, you might want to check out this site. A step-by-step guide with specifications can be downloaded here. A folding dummy will be provided for you to create finished layouts for your booklet. Below are the setup windows for creating both styles of calendar. Competencies this project:
Knowledge Based Study - this will tie into the projects we are working on this week. Yearbook Project: This week we are going to need to all pitch in and help with the task of extracting our seniors from the backgrounds they were photographed in. Our end goal is to have a two page spread for this year's yearbook that shows our seniors celebrating their upcoming graduation. Below is a rough compilation. The steps for doing this can be found in this step-by-step guide or you can watch this video for tips on how to approach this common task: Design Project: Coloring History For this project we'll be learning techniques for colorizing images using Adobe Photoshop. Marina Amaral is a young artist from South America who has taken this project to amazing levels. She has been hired by many museums and publications to add color to historical images. Here is what she thinks is important about her line of work: “Coloring black and white photos is an art that requires a deep work of research, analysis of each object to make it be as realistic as possible, historical knowledge and enough respect to value and preserve every detail in each story. It is a complex process able to transport us to anywhere. ” To be able to do this kind of project requires an understanding of the following:

Knowledge Based Study This Week's Design Project: Designing Tour Posters This week's project requires you to create two different and distinct poster designs for a band, singer, performance artist, or artist group promoting a world tour Due Dates:
Accepted Applications: You can use any application for the graphics used in your poster (Photoshop, Medibang, etc), but your finished design should be completed in either InDesign or Illustrator. You can also include analog artwork into your piece - possibilities include watercolor washes, acrylics, hand lettering, illustrations, etc. Steps for this project using the design process shown above:
Keepin' it REAL! Watch the video below and be ready to discuss this on Friday If you have completed your playing cards project make sure that you've uploaded a slideshow onto your portfolio page. This project is due tomorrow and you need to post it to receive a grade!
Here is another exercise you can do today if your cards are complete do either the circles or hatching exercise on this web page. If you want to change it up, try using a Wacom tablet. Work hard today as I'm still on the mend. Hope to be there tomorrow! Competencies this project:
This Week's Project: Designing Playing Cards This design project is asking you to create a set of face cards (Ten, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, and Joker) in each face using a theme of your choosing. These cards could be created using either Illustrator and Photoshop (or both.) If you choose to work in Photoshop be certain to use a resolution of at least 300 ppi. One other thing - SAVE OFTEN! Due Date: October 27, 2017 slideshow posted to your journal portfolio page. Steps for this project using the design process shown below
Competencies this project:
Portrait Retouching We are going to start doing photo retouching for this year's yearbook in Lightroom. Lightroom will work for nearly 90% of our images. Lightroom is being used by most professional photographers for their post-production work these days. The file management strengths greatly outweigh those of Photoshop. The tools are simpler to use and won't take long to learn. The videos below show the basic process for dealing with most portrait images. Halloween Mask Project This year we're going to be creating/designing masks for Halloween. We have purchased a number of different mask designs that we can use. Your job is to do the following steps:
